4 | 5700 Valley Road, Fairfield, Alabama | Steel manufacturer | 2,300 | Unknown | Unknown | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, this site received 2,300 tons of Libby ore between November 1967 and January 1977. Also, this facility appeared on a list of W.R. Grace licensees and industry partners. EPA documentation indicated that an evaluation of this site was completed and it was decided that no further action would be needed. EPA did not have documentation indicating whether the site was visited or if sampling was conducted. EPA did not have any information indicating the basis for its decision to take no further action at the time of its investigation. In responding to GAO's inquiry about sites that received Libby ore, EPA determined that, as of April 2007, this facility was operating and was subject to the requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). EPA also found that the state of Alabama had conducted a RCRA inspection of this facility in April 2007 and found only minor paperwork violations. However, such an inspection would not normally include checking for asbestos contamination. |
