4 1855 Anitox Road, Buford, Georgia Former exfoliation facility Unknown Yes-October 24, 2000 Yes An EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices did not contain any records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site. However, a 1990 report published by the U.S. Geological Survey indicated that this facility had been a vermiculite exfoliation plant. According to information that EPA collected during its investigation of this site, prior to March 2000, Anitox exfoliated raw vermiculite ore that it obtained from two companies—W.R. Grace and American Vermiculite (which obtained its ore from Africa). The expanded ore was used as a carrier for preservatives used in animal feed. Anitox had stored the expanded ore on-site in large bins. At the time of EPA’s investigation, the bins were still on the site and small piles of vermiculite ore remained near the bins. The property had been sold and was to be redeveloped as a car dealership. EPA collected three samples of soil and waste pile material at this site on October 24, 2000. When analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM), the samples did not contain detectable levels of asbestos. EPA decided no further action was needed at this site.
