4 | 1701 Prospect Street, High Point, North Carolina | Former exfoliation facility | 8,550 | Yes-December 12, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, this site received 8,550 tons of Libby ore between July 1965 and June 1987. According to a 1964 report by the Bureau of Mines (at that time in the U.S. Department of the Interior), this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. Also, reports published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1970, 1975, 1980, and 1985 indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. EPA collected two soil samples at this site on December 12, 2000—one from about 50 feet away from an area where ore was stored and one from about 100 feet from an area where ore was expanded (exfoliated). The samples did not contain detectable levels of asbestos when analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). EPA decided no further action was needed. |
