4 | 13101 Highway 221, Woodruff, South Carolina | Active exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-February 17, 2000 | Yes | An EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices did not contain any records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site. However, a 1990 U.S. Geological Survey report indicated that this facility was a vermiculite exfoliation plant. This facility was active at the time of EPA's visit in February 2000. According to representatives of Palmetto Vermiculite Company, this facility began operations in 1983. These officials said all ore was purchased from outside sources, specifically, Carolina Vermiculite located in Woodruff, South Carolina (which is listed separately in this database); Virginia Vermiculite located in Louisa, Virginia (which is also listed separately in this database); and South Africa. The company officials told EPA that the company had never received any vermiculite ore from the Libby mine. Vermiculite processed at this plant was used in horticultural products, lightweight cements, and plaster, among other things. EPA collected five samples of raw materials and finished product at this site on June 6, 2001, and none of the samples contained detectable levels of asbestos when analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM). On the basis of this information, EPA decided no further action was needed at this site. |
