5 | 300 Genesee Street, Lake Zurich, Illinois | Storage/Shipping of Vermiculite Ore | 12,160 | Yes-March 21, 2000; April 10, 2000 | Yes | According to an EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices, 12,160 tons of vermiculite ore from the Libby mine were shipped to this site between October 1980 and May 1992. According to information gathered during EPA's investigation, this facility was operated by Dearborn Chemical Company, a subsidiary of W.R. Grace, until approximately 1996. The facility manufactured water treatment chemicals and also was a storage facility for vermiculite ore before it was shipped to exfoliation plants. The property was sold to Betz Laboratories in 1996 and then to Hercules, Inc. in 1998. At the time of EPA's visit, Hercules, Inc. had been redeveloping the site in order to sell it as a warehouse facility. In October 2000, EPA collected four soil samples at this site and each contained less than 1 percent asbestos. The samples were analyzed using polarized light microscopy (PLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). On the basis of this information, EPA determined no further action was needed. |
