5 | 504 Railroad Street, Joliet, Illinois | Former exfoliation facility | Unknown | Yes-March 7, 2000 | No | An EPA database compiled from W.R. Grace shipping invoices did not contain any records indicating Libby ore was shipped to this site. However, according to a 1953 report issued by the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines, this facility had been a vermiculite exfoliation plant. EPA's investigation found that a building supply company, Ozinga Brothers, purchased this property in 1999. At that time, a Phase I environmental assessment was performed and EPA was told that no asbestos contamination was found on the property as a result of the assessment. At the time of EPA's visit, Ozinga was constructing a ready-mix concrete plant on the property. There had been no signs of vermiculite during the construction activities. During its investigation of the site, EPA did not observe any vermiculite materials in the soil. On the basis of this information, EPA determined that no further action was needed. |
