Source: GAO survey of state pharmacy regulatory bodies, survey question 10. | GAO-17-363SP
Notes: GAO surveyed the state pharmacy regulatory bodies in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and all but 4 completed the survey.
aThis state reported that, according to a state rule, any pharmacy engaged in sterile compounding would need a special sterile compounding permit, and, conceivably, any licensed pharmacy in the state could do so if all other requirements were met. General practitionersí and medical specialty offices are not regulated by the board of pharmacy; however, if any medical facilities also have a pharmacy, the pharmacy would need a permit to engage in sterile compounding. Outsourcing facilities are also allowed to compound sterile products if the proper permit is obtained.
