Housing Assistance: An Inventory of Fiscal Year 2010 Programs, Tax Expenditures, and Other Activities
U.S. Government Accountability Office
Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP)
Administering Agency/Entity | Department of Housing and Urban Development |
Short Description | Provides funding to public and private entities formulating or carrying out programs to prevent or eliminate discriminatory housing practices. FHIP organizations partner with HUD to identify government agencies that handle complaints and conduct preliminary investigation of claims, including sending "testers" to properties suspected of practicing housing discrimination. In addition to funding organizations that provide direct assistance to individuals who feel they have been discriminated against while attempting to purchase or rent housing, the FHIP program has four initiatives that promote fair housing laws and equal housing opportunity awareness: the Fair Housing Organizations Initiative, the Private Enforcement Initiative, the Education and Outreach Initiative, and the Administrative Enforcement Initiative. Through these initiatives, FHIP supports activities designed to enhance compliance with the Fair Housing Act and substantially equivalent State and local laws prohibiting housing discrimination. |
